Volvo redesigned the XC90 midsize premium SUV for the 2016 model year. For 2017, the redone XC90-now Volvo's best-seller in the United States-also offers a plug-in hybrid powertrain that boosts power to 400 horses.
1) The XC90 model range starts with the T5 Momentum, which provides basic luxury. The T6 Inscription features more upscale amenities, while the T6 R-Design adds sporty touches. All-wheel drive (AWD) is available or compulsory depending on the trim level. An ultra-luxurious Excellence version adds a crystal shifter, goblets, four reclining seats instead of seven, and other premium accessories. For 2017, Volvo offers three trim levels in conjunction with its T8 plug-in hybrid powertrain, including upscale Excellence.
2) Volvo's addition of the T8 Twin Engine plug-in hybrid powertrain adds power and economy by combining the turbocharged engine in the T6 with an 87-horsepower electric motor. For 2017, Volvo also offers option packages that enhance vision and safety, heating and climate, and comfort features such as seat massage, sun visors, and grab handles.
3) The Drive-E 2.0-liter, 4-cylinder turbocharged and supercharged engine that generates 250 horsepower and 258 lb.-ft. of torque is standard. A more energetic, supercharged 4-cylinder engine produces 316 horsepower and 295 lb.-ft. of torque in the Inscription trim level. Engines are partnered with an 8-speed automatic transmission and are EPA-rated to average 25-26 mpg in combined city/highway driving. Also available is the new T8 Twin Engine plug-in hybrid powertrain, which generates 400 horsepower and 472 lb.-ft. of torque and is EPA-rated in all-electric mode at 54 MPGe.
4) The Volvo XC90's interior is described as ergonomic with Scandinavian design features such as Nappa leather upholstery and aluminum or flame birchwood trim. The cabin has fold-down seating to 85.7 cu. ft. of cargo space. Add-on premium features include a 19-speaker Bowers & Wilkins audio system. The instrument panel is replaced with a 12.3-in. digital display and the infotainment system features a 9-in. screen, navigation, rearview camera, and more.
5) Advanced safety systems are standard and available in different trim levels of the XC90 and include the semi-autonomous Pilot Assist, which, in conjunction with adaptive cruise control, allows setting a speed and distance from the car in front. The 2017 Volvo XC90 also received a "Top Safety Pick+" rating for crash protection from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) and earns the highest-possible 5-star overall safety rating from the federal government.
