Buyers in line for delivery of the all-new 2016 Volvo XC90 can rent an XC60 at a reduced rate while they wait, thanks to a new partnership between Volvo and Enterprise Rent-A-Car.
About 30,000 XC90s ? half of the first year's projected sales ? were sold worldwide ahead of the official launch of the seven-passenger SUV, meaning there are a lot of customers waiting to get their hands on one.
And with U.S. deliveries scheduled to begin in July, buyers who haven't already placed their orders will have an even longer wait.
To help ease the pain, Volvo has arranged for customers who have a lease or loan expiring before the arrival of their XC90 to get a good deal on a short-term rental of the smaller five-passenger XC60 through Enterprise Rent-A-Car. Then, when the new model arrives, an Enterprise employee will take the buyer to the local Volvo dealership to make the switch.
Volvo has not disclosed exactly how much it is contributing to the cost of each rental.
As part of the program, Enterprise is purchasing the XC60 models from Volvo dealers and will sell them back to those dealers after approximately six months. That allows Enterprise to continue renting those vehicles in cases where the buyer only needs the XC60 for a month or two.
"Customers are excited about the XC90, and we are happy to accommodate them while they await their all-new XC90," said North Holbrook, manager of commercial sales for Volvo Cars of North America, in a statement. "Our partnership with Enterprise Rent-A-Car is all about providing convenience to our customers."
The 2016 Volvo XC90 has been revamped from the ground up ? the model's first complete redesign in 12 years. And, according to the Edmunds road test, "it was well worth the wait."
All versions of the new XC90 are powered by a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that is both supercharged and turbocharged. It puts out 316 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque and, says Volvo, will accelerate the 5,000-pound vehicle to 60 mph in 6.1 seconds.
All-wheel-drive is standard throughout the range, as is stop-start technology and an eight-speed automatic transmission.
Inside, the new XC90 provides the level of comfort and convenience expected in a luxury SUV. And of course it offers the latest high-tech features, including a 9-inch touchscreen display, smartphone link, ten-speaker audio system with USB inputs, park assist, collision avoidance and lane-departure warning.
Prices for the 2016 Volvo XC90 start at $49,895, including a $995 delivery charge.
Key competitors to the XC90 include the Acura MDX, Audi Q7, Infiniti QX60 and Mercedes-Benz GL-Class.
