Volvo's redesigned XC90 three-row SUV features a unique hybrid system with a gasoline engine and attached electric motor powering the front wheels and an electric motor powering the rear wheels.

"It is the safest and most stylish SUV on the market," claimed Hakan Samuelsson, the CEO of Volvo, at the Detroit auto show.

The new XC90 SUV announced earlier this year will be joined by two models of the S60 sedan, XC and Inscription variants, for the U.S. market by this summer.

The S60 XC, is a taller-riding wagon, and is built in the company's Ghent, Belgium, factory, while the Inscription is a luxurious model with "natural high-end materials" covering the interior surfaces, according to Lex Kerssemakers, the lead product manager at Volvo.

The S60 sedan features the most legroom in premium cars, he added. All three new vehicles are intended to help Volvo regain its 100,000 vehicle sales per year volume in the U.S., added Samuelsson. "We had 6,000 orders for the XC90 before production even started. "Our brand promise to customers is to protect what is important to them."
